It is about 800 miles to Flagstaff, and 900 miles to Holbrook, from Boulder, CO. This is a multiple day's trip, this is a biggie...
Many other Landmarks can be included on this trip, like Monument Valley on the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation. Experience the landscape where western movies where made. Visit the Meteor Crater Natural Landmark on the way to Holbrook, when driving to the Petrified Forest National Park.
From Flagstaff it will be a day's ride to Las Vegas, Nevada, just in case you have your eyes on Las Vegas, Hoover Dam and Lake Mead National Recreation area.
It will take several days to make the loop back to Boulder, CO., by going north, through Nevada and Utah from Las Vegas.
Or choose to take the route east from Holbrook through New Mexico via Santa Fe (Arts and crafts). Then up the scenic road west of The Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range, with peaks of over 14000 feet. And stop by the Great Sand Dunes National Park (see Buffalo, Naturalist hikes, in the highest desert) in Colorado.
The long way around is about 2500-3500 miles long, for a generous trip of 7-10 days, at about 350 miles per day, for 6-8 hours driving time per day for the way back to Boulder, CO.
The short way is about 1800 miles for a round trip to the Grand Canyon and or Petrified Forest National Park from Boulder, CO. 5-6 days long at about 350 miles per day, for 6-8 hours driving time per day.
Take a look on the map because this is a very long scenic round trip in the desert, which can be very hot in temperature. Sometimes well over 100 deg. Fahrenheit (39 Celsius). When driving from State to State, you will be moving through weather and temperature changes, altitude and latitude changes.
